Hope in the midst of fallenness

Tuesday of Holy Week John 13:21-33,36-38 This Holy Tuesday, Satan entered into Judas who dipped bread together with Jesus and left to do what he had to do - betray Jesus. Yet, Jesus is the Messiah prophesied in Isaiah, the One called before he was born, elected to save humankind from sin.  God's spirit is in Him. Peter, on the other hand, though appearing concerned about who would betray Jesus, did not know that he would end up doing the same.  Jesus said, "You cannot follow" for not only Peter, but us, are not yet prepared to face the ultimate confrontation between evil and good. In moments when we are confronted with our own weaknesses and sin, because we are not yet ready to follow Jesus, do the following: First, stay close to Jesus.  This is simply faith, when our natural faculties to understand collide with faith, we give in to faith precisely we believe in Jesus. Second, stay close to the light.  God promised Israel to be the "light to t...

Hope against hope

Tuesday of week 4 in Ordinary Time, II Mark 5:21-43 David deeply grieved for the death of his son Absalom even if his son wished to overthrow him. In today's Gospel, Jesus performed two miracles, one who simply touched the hem of his garment and another one who recently died.  Both stories reflected Jesus' ability to give life even in the state of death.  David reflected Jesus who was totally immersed in the rejection of men on the cross, yet he chose to forgive them and offer them life.  In the Gospel, Jesus' power to heal and raise from death is overwhelming. Let's hope even in the smallest minute details of our lives and offer them all to God.  In the Lord's prayer, we pray, "Give us this day our ...

Destroy that weak faith Luke 1:5-25 After having been exposed to the lineage of Jesus and Joseph's strong faith, in our desire to celebrate the mystery of our salvation and God's love that it is also important to learn a thing or two about the consequences of a weak faith like Zechariah's so we may not imitate him, rather, do exactly the opposite.  What are the signs of a weak faith? First, doubting Doubting leads us nowhere.  It is the exact opposite of faith.  Doubting in things unseen can only lead us to believing in material and tried and tested things.  But life is faith.  The only thing that helps us survive is our faith in God. Second, despair For Zechariah, things are too late.  He is too old and Elizabeth is both old and barren.  Hope is what keeps us going - for an OFW to hope that he would go home and realize a better life for the family; for us to hope that this world will not end in violence but there would be a better future ahe...
