"Follow me"

Friday of the 7th week of Eastertide John 21:15-19 We are nearing the end of the Acts of the Apostles with St. Paul decided by King Agrippa and Festus to send him to Rome to be tried.  We know that he would be judged unjustly to be condemned to death. In the Gospel, Jesus, after asking Peter, "Do you love me?" and receiving a positive answer, told him, "Follow me." Like St. Paul followed Jesus till Rome,  Peter followed Jesus till he was also martyred  in Rome.  Following Jesus has the following consequences: First, it starts from love and ends in love - Love is the sole motive for following Jesus whatever consequence it may have on the bearer; Second, it results in doing God's work on earth - With love as its sole motive, all our actions reflect what God wants us to do; Third, it gives life to others - Not only does following do good to the person, it also does good to all others loved by God, "Feed my sheep".  This is supreme generosity...

Following Jesus

Friday of the 7th week of Eastertide John 21:15-19 We follow that which we love.  It may be a person or an object. Following entails an offering of life itself, inclusive of all time, talent, and treasure for that which we love. Following Jesus entails the following: First, that we follow Jesus in the world of goodness.  This implies a direct choice to follow what is good and avoid what is evil.  It implies our sincere desire to enter into heaven in the realm of goodness. Second, following Jesus implies that we follow Jesus in his words and actions as the path to the ultimate good.  We heed Jesus' command to sell everything we own, give them to the poor, and come follow him.  Are we ready for it? Third, following Jesus entails following him even to the cross.  St. Paul's life is exactly like that of Jesus.  The moment he enters into Jerusalem, he would be tried and put to death like what happened to Jesus.  He even appealed to b...

Friday of the 7th week of Eastertide

To follow Jesus John 21:15-19 Jesus said to Peter, " when you grow old,  you will stretch out your hands,  and somebody else will put a belt round you  and take you where you would rather not go.’  Afterwards, Jesus said, "Follow me." We followed the Lord ever since we were baptised.  Our responsibility is to explore God's world. We followed Jesus when we were confirmed.  During that time we resolve to be faithful followers of Jesus Christ. We followed Jesus we were ordained, got married, or took a solemn oath of chastity, poverty, and obedience.  From then on, our lives  become a series of incidents of following Jesus. We are to follow Jesus, even to situations or places we don't want to go.  But He leads us by the hand and gives us life and for others, life through us. Unless we follow Jesus, our lives are useless.

The ultimate message of all

the lessons of the readings tell a lot about succeeding in life. Jesus showed us the ultimate way to life - by offering oneself... everything is communication... the communication of God ... the Word made flesh ... it is the ultimate message of all ... to take up one's cross ... and follow Him.
